Isaac and Rebekah

The story of the search for a wife for Isaac, the son of Abraham, is one of the most detailed and significant accounts in the book of Genesis in the Bible. This narrative is not only a story of love and divine providence, but it also establishes the continuity of God’s promise to Abraham and the future nation of Israel.

Isaac, the son of Abraham and Sarah, was considered the heir of the divine promise to become a great nation. However, before his marriage, Sarah passed away, and Abraham, concerned with securing a worthy lineage for Isaac, decided to send his oldest servant to Mesopotamia to find a suitable wife for his son. This servant, whom some identify as Eliezer, was instructed by Abraham to find a wife among the relatives of his family in the city of Nahor.

The servant then undertook a long and significant journey until he reached the city of Nahor. When he arrived, he prayed to God to show him a clear sign of who would be the right woman for Isaac. He asked that when he requested water from a young woman at a well, she would offer not only to give him water but also to water his camels. This generous and helpful young woman was Rebekah, who showed hospitality and kindness to the servant, thus fulfilling the sign he had asked for in prayer.

Rebekah is presented as a young and beautiful woman, a descendant of Nahor, Abraham’s brother. The servant learns that she is Nahor’s granddaughter, thereby confirming her connection to Abraham’s family. The servant explains his mission to Rebekah and her family, and after gaining their consent, Rebekah agrees to travel with the servant to Canaan to become Isaac’s wife.

When Rebekah arrives in Canaan and meets Isaac, the account describes a tender and moving encounter in which Isaac finds comfort after the loss of his mother and solace in Rebekah’s presence. They marry and begin a family that, through the generations, will fulfill God’s promise of becoming a great nation.
